Pippin Phonics

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet.  The ‘sounds’ they make we call phonemes e.g. the ‘a’ in cat.  Some letters combine to make other phonemes (sounds) e.g. the letter ‘c’ and ‘h’ make ‘ch’ for church.  Altogether there are 44 phonemes. We teach “Letters and Sounds” (phonics) in lots of fun and active ways in school.  If you want to find out more about phonics and how to pronounce phonemes, a good website is ‘Mr Thorne does phonics’.  It has many different videos which articulates how to pronounce individual letters, digraphs (two letters making one phoneme/sound) and trigraphs (three letters making one phoneme/sound). http://mrthorne.com/home/phonics/letters-and-sounds/?bib_page_offset=10 On this website you can click on one of the many videos. Phonics Play has some fun games you can play with your child, including the treasure chest game which introduces children to nonsense words and real words. This is helpful particularly to Year 1 children who will encounter this as part of the Year 1 Phonics check. http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk Two other great websites to visit with fun phonics activities on are Crick Web and Woodlands Junior websites.

Pippin KS1 SATs

The format of Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) at the end of Key Stage 1 and 2 changed recently.  In May 2016, children in Year 2 and Year 6 were the first to take the new style SATs papers. The tests in English and Maths reflected the 2014 National Curriculum and remain statutory for 2017.

Later on in the year we will give you further information about what tests your child will be expected to take.
