Mathematics is an essential life skill, providing the foundations for everyday life, financial understanding, science, technology and engineering. At Thorncombe St Mary's, we aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who enjoy exploring patterns, solving problems and explaining their thinking.

We teach mathematics every day using the White Rose Maths approach, ensuring that children build fluency, develop reasoning skills and become confident problem solvers. New learning is carefully built upon prior knowledge, with regular opportunities to revisit key concepts, identify and address misconceptions alongside adults, and deepen understanding over time.

Children use a range of practical resources and pictorial representations to support their learning before moving on to abstract methods. We follow a clear calculation policy to teach the four operations, alongside a structured fluency curriculum that develops number facts, times tables and mental maths skills from Reception to Year 6. Wherever possible, children apply their mathematical knowledge across the wider curriculum and in meaningful real-life contexts, helping them to understand the importance and relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom.
